TOP 5 SIGNS YOUR GUITAR NEEDS A PROFESSIONAL SETUP

1. It’s Hard to Play (High Action or String Buzz): If your guitar feels like it’s fighting you—strings too high, or buzzing when you fret a note—it’s a classic sign of poor setup. High action can fatigue your hands quickly, while buzzing strings usually mean the neck or frets need adjustment. A professional setup can fix both, optimizing your action for comfort and clarity.

2. It Won’t Stay in Tune: If you’re constantly tuning—even after installing new strings—your guitar may have issues with the nut, tuning machines, or neck relief. A pro setup includes checking all these points, ensuring stable tuning and better overall performance.

3. Intonation Is Off: Play a perfectly tuned open string, then check it at the 12th fret. If it’s out of tune there, your intonation is off. This is a common issue and can be caused by incorrect saddle positions or neck angle. A setup can correct intonation so your chords sound in tune across the fretboard.

4. Frets Feel Sharp or Uneven: As seasons change, wood expands and contracts—sometimes causing fret ends to stick out or frets to become uneven. This can be uncomfortable or even painful while playing. During a setup, a tech will dress the frets and ensure a smooth, even playing surface.

5. You’ve Changed String Gauges or Tunings:

Switching string gauge or tuning (like going from standard E to drop D or C) changes the tension on your guitar. This can throw off neck relief, intonation, and action. A setup will recalibrate everything to match your new preferences.
