We recently had the pleasure of working on a Westfield B200 acoustic guitar, a solid and reliable instrument known for its warm tone and comfortable playability. The guitar came into the shop with a worn plastic nut and tired strings that were long overdue for replacement.
The Diagnosis
The original nut was plastic and had developed uneven wear over time, causing buzzing on the open strings and affecting the guitar's overall tone and tuning stability. The strings were also dull, making the guitar sound flat and lifeless.
The Repair
To breathe new life into the instrument, we installed a hand-shaped bone nut—a significant upgrade over the factory plastic version. Bone is denser and harder, which improves sustain, tuning accuracy, and the guitar’s overall tonal clarity. Every slot was precision-cut to match the gauge of the new strings and to optimize string height and spacing.
After the nut installation, we cleaned and conditioned the fretboard, checked the frets for any sharp edges or wear, and gave the guitar a full restring with a fresh set of phosphor bronze acoustic strings. The result was immediately noticeable: brighter highs, improved resonance, and a smoother, more responsive feel under the fingers.
Final Thoughts
The Westfield B200 is a great value acoustic, and with a few quality upgrades, it can punch well above its weight. Installing a bone nut is one of the best enhancements you can make to improve tone and tuning stability without breaking the bank.
If your acoustic guitar isn’t performing at its best, don’t hesitate to get in touch. A simple nut replacement and setup can make all the difference.
