Choosing the right violin size is essential for comfort, good technique, and long-term progress. Whether you’re shopping for a child or an adult beginner, this guide will help you determine exactly what size violin you need — with clear measurements.
What Size Violin Do I Need?
Violins come in several sizes, from very small (for young children) to full size (for most teens and adults). The correct size depends on arm length and overall comfort, not just age.

How to Measure for the Right Violin Size
The most accurate way to determine size is by measuring arm length.
Have the player stand straight.
Extend the left arm straight out to the side (parallel to the floor).
Measure from the neck (base of the jaw) to the middle of the palm.

How It Should Feel
The player should comfortably wrap their fingers around the scroll.
The elbow should not be locked or overly bent.
The wrist should remain straight (not strained).
Violin Sizes for Children
Children grow quickly. Many young players start with smaller sizes and move up every 1–2 years.
Prevents tension and bad posture
Makes learning easier
Reduces risk of injury
Improves tone production
If a child is between sizes, it’s usually safer to choose the smaller size.
Violin Sizes for Adults
Most adults use a 4/4 (full-size) violin. However, adults with shorter arms or smaller frames may feel more comfortable with a 3/4 violin. Comfort and control matter more than standard size.
What Does 4/4 Actually Mean?
Violin sizes are fractional but not mathematically proportional. A 4/4 violin is simply the standard full-size instrument.
Typical full-size violin body length: About 14 inches (35.5 cm) (body only, not including the neck).
Common Questions
Can you play on a violin that’s too big?
You can, but it may cause:
Shoulder and wrist strain
Poor technique
Slower progress
Is it okay to size up to grow into it?
No. Oversized violins create bad habits and discomfort.
Do violin bows come in sizes too?
Yes! The bow must match the violin size.
