EKO Acoustic Guitar: A Complete Restoration & Setup for a Happy Client
There’s something special about working on an Eko acoustic guitar. These instruments carry decades of character—warm tones, vintage charm, and often a story that makes each one unique. Recently, I had the pleasure of servicing an Eko acoustic for a client who wanted to bring new life to a guitar that had been sitting unplayed for far too long.
Initial Assessment
When the guitar arrived at the shop, it showed the signs of age and use you’d expect from a well-loved vintage instrument:
High action that made it uncomfortable to play
Dry fretboard
Worn frets
Slight neck relief issues
Bridge lifting ever so slightly
Intonation noticeably off
Despite those issues, the guitar still had good bones—solid structure, no cracks, and that unmistakable Eko tone waiting underneath the dust.
The Work Performed
To restore the guitar to its full potential, I carried out a full setup and several corrective procedures:
1. Neck Adjustment
Using careful, incremental truss rod adjustments, I corrected the neck relief to restore proper playability. This immediately improved the feel of the guitar.
2. Fretboard Cleaning & Conditioning
Years of dryness had left the fretboard thirsty, so it received a deep clean followed by a conditioning treatment. The wood soaked it up beautifully, regaining its rich color and smooth texture.
3. Fret Polishing
Polished frets don’t just look fantastic—they reduce playing friction and improve string life. After the polish, the frets shone like new and felt silky under the fingers.
4. Bridge Repair
The lifting bridge was carefully re-glued and clamped to ensure solid contact with the top. This step was essential for both tone and long-term stability.
5. Nut & Saddle Adjustment
To get the action perfectly balanced, I reshaped and adjusted the nut slots and sanded the saddle to the ideal height. This made the guitar far easier to play while maintaining strong projection.
6. Fresh Strings & Intonation
With new strings installed, I dialed in the intonation so the guitar plays in tune all the way up the neck.
