Tuning pegs (or machine heads) do more than just set your pitch — they affect tuning stability, feel, and even your guitar’s look. Here’s a quick guide to the main types:
1. Open-Gear Tuners
Classic, lightweight, and easy to service. Common on vintage acoustics and classical guitars. They look great but can collect dust over time.
2. Sealed-Gear Tuners
Modern and durable, with enclosed mechanisms that stay smooth for years. Found on most new guitars. Slightly heavier, but virtually maintenance-free.
3. Locking Tuners
Favored by players who bend strings or use tremolos. A built-in clamp locks each string for rock-solid tuning and faster string changes.
